COLOMBO (News 1st) - Rumesh Tharanga climbing further in the global rankings, is now ranked second in the world in the men’s javelin throw event.

Sri Lanka’s rising athletics star Rumesh Tharanga delivered a stellar performance on the global stage by winning the men’s javelin throw event at the prestigious 2026 Ostrava Golden Spike meet, becoming the first Sri Lankan ever to secure victory at the renowned international competition.

The 65th edition of the Golden Spike athletics championship was held in the Czech Republic, attracting some of the world’s top track and field athletes. 

Competing under high expectations, Tharanga produced a commanding display, achieving a winning throw of 86.57 metres to finish at the top of the field.

Tharanga’s performance once again underlines his rapid rise in international javelin throwing, where he has emerged as one of the leading competitors in recent months.

At the Diamond League meet in Rome, Tharanga produced an impressive throw of 92.62 metres, placing him among the top performers globally and firmly establishing his credentials as a world-class javelin thrower.

The remarkable achievement has contributed to his current standing in the global rankings, where he is positioned second in the world in the men’s javelin throw event.
