COLOMBO (News 1st): The fishing boat that went missing after setting sail from the Beruwala fishing harbor with 6 fishermen on board has been found.

Director General of the Department of Fisheries, Susantha Kahawatta, stated that the boat had stalled mid-sea after running out of fuel. He further mentioned that arrangements were made to send fuel to the vessel via another boat.

The fishing boat, named 'Meenu Baba 1', had gone missing after setting sail on the 26th of last month.

The Director General of Fisheries also stated that a merchant vessel has rescued an injured fisherman from another fishing boat, which was traveling in the seas towards Indonesia, roughly 700 nautical miles away from the island. He is currently being brought back to land. His leg had been severely injured in an accident. The Director General noted that the Navy intervened to transfer him to the merchant vessel.

Meanwhile, another fishing vessel named 'Oceanic 06' has also drifted toward Indonesia due to a technical fault. Susantha Kahawatta, the Director General of Fisheries, mentioned that the 6 fishermen on board have been rescued by another vessel and are currently being brought back to land.

He emphasized that special attention must be paid to the safety of fishermen and the seaworthiness of vessels when engaging in deep-sea fishing.
