COLOMBO (News 1st) - Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya joined the Satana program on Sirasa TV last night, where she discussed the government’s plans for the education sector and addressed the question of whether 6% of the Gross Domestic Product will be allocated to education in the upcoming budget.
She explained that while UNESCO has recommended allocating 6% of GDP for education and 3% for health, such a policy must be implemented gradually and strategically rather than abruptly.
She noted that without proper administrative changes, directly assigning 6% of GDP to education could lead to inefficiency.
However, she emphasized that the government has already committed at least 80% of the funds allocated by the President to the sector and insisted that there is no shortage of funds for educational development.
