COLOMBO (News 1st) - The first Randoli Perahera of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera is currently parading through the streets of Kandy.
The procession commenced at the auspicious time of 6:44 p.m.
The honour of carrying the Sacred Tooth Relic casket tonight has been entrusted to Wasana, the Royal tusker of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya.
He is accompanied by Sinha Raja and Pulathisi Raja, two tuskers from the Sri Dalada Maligawa elephant herd.
Meanwhile, police say a special security and traffic management plan is in operation in Kandy with the commencement of the Randoli Perahera.
The traditional offerings to the Sacred Tooth Relic, made annually by the indigenous community, was also held today.
The ritual was conducted with the participation of around 100 members of the indigenous community, led by Dambana Indigenous Leader Uruwarige Wannila Aththo.
Speaking on the tradition, Wannila Aththo said the offering has been carried out by his ancestors for generations and continues to be passed down through the indigenous community.
He said the tradition has been continued for the past 28 years, describing it as a great honour and blessing for his generation and those that follow.
