COLOMBO (News 1st) - Three students were arrested for a clash at a school in Hatton.
Footage of this was recently circulated on social media.
Police identified the suspects as 16-year-old residents of Hatton and Dikoya.
The arrests followed a police investigation into video footage showing a group of school students assaulting another student.
Investigations revealed that the incident occurred approximately 21 days ago, in early March.
The assault was triggered by a school disciplinary matter.
The victim had informed a class teacher that another student was smoking.
Subsequently two other students carried out the attack on the victim.
No prior complaint had been lodged as the school principal had intervened and warned both parties to settle the matter internally.
The victim and his mother had filed a formal police complaint, stating they faced severe embarrassment and distress after the video of the assault went viral on social media.
The victim has since been referred to a Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) for a medical examination.
Police confirmed they have recorded statements from the three students involved in the assault and those responsible for releasing the footage online.
